Informed by the integral model developed by Ken Wilber, Integral psychotherapy values core truths from every clinical orientation and embraces practices from all psychotherapeutic methods. Far from mere eclecticism, the result is a powerful and flexible system of comprehensive therapy.
Integral psychotherapy is itself an example of integral practice: it is designed to engage you physically, emotionally, cognitively, interpersonally and spiritually.
Most therapies are used to concentrating on just one aspect, the personal interior; how the person feels about themselves, this approach is normally the sole area of traditional psychotherapy.
The integral approach looks at how an individual relates to the immediate outside world, to the group and culture within which they live.
Integral psychotherapy seeks to provide a sound assessment of some of the difficulties we all encounter as human beings, working from a model of human development that honours the interconnected dimensions of living in the world. These include biological, psychological, spiritual social and cultural aspects of being. Consideration is also given to the feminine and masculine aspects of life, such as those aspects which are self serving and those which relate to being of service to others.
It has been estimated that there are over 400 different approaches to counselling and psychotherapy, made up of primarily four forces.
- Behaviourism / objective and physicalistic approaches.
- Psychoanalysis and psychosexual approaches.
- Humanistic / existential and mental intellectual approaches.
- Transpersonal or spiritual approaches.
Each of these psychologies has something very important and very significant and also limited to tell us.
Transpersonal psychotherapy is interested in all stages of life, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. It accepts and attempts to unite the first three schools of psychotherapy. It is a holistic approach, pulling upon the resources of whatever model will be of benefit to each person. Knowing this integrative approach allows practitioners to work with the uniqueness and individuality of each person.
